A brief history of Chateau L'Enclos, Pomerol, Bordeaux

Château L'Enclos, a distinguished estate located in the Pomerol appellation, boasts a rich history that dates back to the 19th century when it was founded by the Larroucaud family. This esteemed property has garnered acclaim for its commitment to producing wines that embody the depth and complexity of Pomerol's terroir. In 2006, Americans Stephen and Denise Adams bought the property from the Larroucauds. Seasoned vignerons, the Adams also own Château Fonplegade in Saint Émilion in addition to other Bordeaux houses and a Napa Valley vineyard. The estate cultivates nine-and-a-half- hectares planted 83% to Merlot and 17% to Cabernet Franc. The average age of the vines is about 30 years with some that are much older. The vineyards of Château L'Enclos are strategically situated on the diverse soils that characterise Pomerol, including gravel, clay, iron and sand. This geological variety, combined with the microclimate of the region, creates the perfect environment for cultivating Merlot and Cabernet Franc, the varietals that compose the estate's prestigious blends.

Understanding Chateau L'Enclos, Pomerol, Bordeaux

In the vineyard, Château L'Enclos employs sustainable viticulture practices to ensure the health and vitality of the vines and soil. Attention to detail is paramount, with rigorous selection and hand-harvesting of grapes to maintain the highest quality. The estate's approach combines traditional methods with modern techniques, aiming to express the unique qualities of each vintage. Vinification is carefully managed to preserve the fruit's intrinsic qualities, with fermentation in stainless steel and ageing in French oak barrels. This process imbues the wine with a harmonious balance of fruit, tannin, and oak, resulting in a wine that is accessible in its youth yet possesses the structure and complexity to age gracefully. Château L'Enclos displays ripe red and black fruit, hints of spice, earth and subtle oak in an elegant and balanced palate and silky tannins. Its ability to evolve further layers of complexity makes it a sought-after addition to any cellar.
