An introduction to Hauts de Pontet-Canet, Pauillac, Bordeaux

Les Hauts de Pontet-Canet is Château Pontet-Canet’s second label, which was first produced in 1982. Some of its vintages in the 1990s were sold under the name of Benjamin de Pontet. Production of the second wine has consistently declined, due to Tesseron’s preference to allow the vintage and vineyards to express themselves in their entirety and to focus their efforts on the grand vin. Instead of making more of their second wine, Pontet-Canet has reduced the yields and has declassified more of their wine. Today, Les Hauts de Pontet-Canet is no longer produced.

Understanding Hauts de Pontet-Canet, Pauillac, Bordeaux

Les Hauts de Pontet-Canet is a Cabernet Sauvignon dominated blend, with the addition of Cabernet Franc, Merlot, and Petit Verdot. The grapes are manually harvested, sorted, and then transported to the winery's gravity-feed cellars for crushing. Stainless steel and concrete vats are used for fermentation, and the use of oak is limited. Les Hauts de Pontet is an easy-drinking wine that lacks the depth of Pontet-Canet but reflects a lighter style of Pauillac.
