In the heart of the Pauillac appellation lies Château Haut-Bages Monpelou, a distinguished estate with origins dating back to the early 19th century. While not included in the 1855 classification, the estate holds Cru Bourgeois Supérieur status in the Pauillac appellation. Its Grand Vin is widely considered to rival the Cru Classés of the appellation. The Borie-Manoux group, owned by the Castéja family, purchased the estate in 1970. The 15-hectare vineyard is mostly planted to Cabernet Sauvignon, supported by Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. The property shares cellar facilities at Château Batailley, its sister estate. The transformation of Château Haut-Bages Monpelou in recent years, under the stewardship of its owners, has revitalised both its vineyards and winemaking facilities. This modernisation, coupled with a steadfast commitment to traditional practices, has elevated the estate's status, allowing its wines to achieve greater recognition.
