Understanding La Chapelle de Bages, Chateau Haut-Bages Liberal, Pauillac, Bordeaux
The grapes for Chapelle de Bages Libéral are sourced from younger vines on the Château Haut-Bages Libéral estate, which is known for its gravelly soils atop limestone bedrock. These conditions are ideal for cultivating the Cabernet Sauvignon that dominates this wine and the supporting Merlot. Grapes undergo rigorous selection to ensure only the best are used. Following the harvest, the grapes are gently pressed and fermented in temperature-controlled tanks to preserve the purity of fruit flavour. Maturation then takes place in a combination of new and seasoned French oak barrels for approximately 12 months. This allows the wine to develop nuanced oak notes without overshadowing the vibrant fruit characteristics. Chapelle de Bages Libéral displays ripe black fruit, cassis, hints of spice and tobacco in a well-structured palate with finessed tannins. This wine, while approachable in its youth, possesses the capacity to age gracefully.
