Understanding Chateau Haut-Bages Liberal 5eme Cru Classe, Pauillac, Bordeaux

The vineyards of Château Haut-Bages Libéral, sprawling across gravelly hills near the Gironde estuary, benefit from the region's microclimate and the excellent drainage of its soils. These conditions are ideal for Cabernet Sauvignon, which dominates the estate's plantings, and Merlot. The approach to viticulture is grounded in a philosophy of harmony and respect for nature, emphasising the health of the vineyard ecosystem and the expressiveness of the terroir. The harvest is carefully timed to ensure optimal ripeness, with grapes undergoing strict selection so only the finest see vinification. Fermentation takes place in temperature-controlled stainless steel and concrete vats. This is followed by a meticulous ageing process that sees one-fifth of the wine maturing for 14 to 18 months in amphorae and the remainder in 40% new French oak. These steps balance the wine's fruit, tannins and oak influence. The result is a Grand Vin that not only captures the spirit and character of Pauillac but also reflects the innovative spirit and environmental consciousness of Château Haut-Bages Libéral. Château Haut-Bages Libéral features rich black fruit, tobacco, cedar, subtle smokiness and a touch of vanilla in an elegant palate with a backbone of firm, ripe tannins. The wine has excellent cellaring capacity.
