A brief history of Chateau Kirwan 3eme Cru Classe, Margaux, Bordeaux

Located in the heart of Margaux, one of Bordeaux's most prestigious appellations, Château Kirwan carries a legacy that dates back to the 18th century. Bordeaux wine connoisseur and later American president, Thomas Jefferson, rated it highly and it was among the estates ranked as a Third Growth in the famous 1855 Bordeaux Classification. The name Kirwan itself is intertwined with the rich tapestry of Bordeaux's viticultural history, attributed to the Irish merchant Mark Kirwan, who was instrumental in establishing the château's reputation in the late 1700s. The Schÿler family, stewards of Château Kirwan since the 1920s, have meticulously preserved the estate's heritage while steering it into the modern era with significant investments in the vineyard and winemaking facilities. They favour a minimal-interventionist approach to producing wine to allow precise terroir expression and are known for regarding themselves as "wine helpers" rather than winemakers. Cabernet Sauvignon dominates plantings alongside smaller quantities of Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot.
