A brief history of Chateau Doisy-Vedrines 2eme Cru Classe, Barsac, Bordeaux

Located in the renowned Barsac appellation of Bordeaux, the roots of Château Doisy-Vedrines date to the early 18th century. The estate was ranked Second Growth in the 1855 classification of Sauternes and Barsac. The estate originally made up a wider Doisy holding founded in 1704. After the French revolution, the holdings fractured and split into Château Doisy-Védrines, Château Doisy-Daëne and Château Doisy-Dubroca. Today, surrounded by other illustrious estates, Doisy-Vedrines is celebrated for its role in elevating the Barsac appellation, particularly known for its exquisite sweet wines. The Castéja family, guardians of this 27-hectare property since the 19th century, have upheld the Château's tradition while infusing modernity to enhance its renown. The 35 hectares of vines are planted four-fifths to Sémillon followed by Sauvignon Blanc and Muscadelle.

Understanding Chateau Doisy-Vedrines 2eme Cru Classe, Barsac, Bordeaux

The vineyards of Château Doisy-Vedrines flourish on the unique terroir of Barsac, characterised by its limestone and clay soils interspersed with fossilized oyster shells. This distinctive soil composition, coupled with the microclimate, is ideal for the development of the noble rot (Botrytis cinerea), crucial for the production of their renowned sweet wines. The estate's sustainable viticulture practices, combined with an average vine age of over 35 years, contribute to the intensity and depth of the grapes. Grape harvest sees successive waves through the vineyard to select the most botrytis-affected bunches. The winemaking process at Doisy-Vedrines involves a careful selection of botrytised grapes, which are then gently pressed. Fermentation is conducted in stainless-steel tanks and oak barrels, followed by 18 months of ageing in French oak, a step that imparts subtle nuances without overpowering the intrinsic qualities of the wine. Château Doisy-Vedrines displays honeyed apricot, candied citrus, jasmine, ginger and spice in a rich, luscious palate with bright acidity. This wine has excellent cellaring capacity.
