Understanding Albert Boxler, Riesling Grand Cru, Sommerberg, Alsace
The Sommerberg vineyard is distinguished by its high-altitude, steep granite slopes that face south and southeast. These conditions create a microclimate that is ideal for the cultivation of Riesling grapes. This wine is made from fruit growing across two plots. Grapes develop steadily, allowing for concentrated flavours and distinct mineral quality. The Boxler family emphasise a sustainable approach to viticulture, employing practices that maintain the health and balance of the vineyard for top fruit quality. Following a manual harvest, the wine ferments with natural yeasts followed by nearly a year of lees ageing in hundred-year-old oak barrels. This step adds depth, complexity and structure. This Riesling is noted for citrus, green apple and white peach, complemented by a subtle floral undertone. On the palate, it presents a crisp acidity balanced with a mineral-driven structure, leading to a clean and lingering finish. Boxler Sommerberg Riesling boasts significant ageing potential.
