Understanding Domaine Weinbach, Riesling Vendanges Tardives Grand Cru, Schlossberg, Alsace
The Schlossberg vineyard's steep, south-facing, sun-drenched slopes are composed of mineral-rich soils, providing an ideal environment for Riesling grapes. The VT designation indicates that the grapes were harvested late in the season, allowing them to develop concentrated sugars and rich, complex flavours. This process is enhanced by the region's cool climate, which contributes to the grapes' natural acidity and aromatic intensity. Fruit is handpicked and gently pressed, with fermentation occurring naturally. The wine is then aged in old oak foudres, which enriches its texture while preserving the delicate fruit flavours and minerality inherent to the Schlossberg terroir. Domaine Weinbach's Riesling Schlossberg VT displays layers of ripe apricot, honey and citrus zest underpinned by a distinctive minerality. This wine boasts a luscious sweetness balanced by a crisp acidity, closing in a long finish. This Riesling VT, with its superb balance and intricate flavour profile, has excellent ageing potential.
