An introduction to d'Arenberg, The Dead Arm Shiraz, McLaren Vale, South Australia
D'Arenberg Dead Arm Shiraz is a flagship wine that encapsulates the essence of the McLaren Vale region in South Australia. This powerful and complex Shiraz is named after the vine disease which affects one arm of the vine, causing it to wither and die, but paradoxically, results in more robust and intensely flavoured grapes on the healthy arm. Dead Arm Shiraz is a striking example of d'Arenberg's commitment to crafting expressive and characterful wines.

Understanding d'Arenberg, The Dead Arm Shiraz, McLaren Vale, South Australia
The vineyards of d'Arenberg in McLaren Vale are characterised by their rich, clay-heavy soil and warm, Mediterranean climate. These conditions are ideal for the cultivation of Shiraz, contributing to the grapes' deep colour, robust flavours and structured tannins. Grapes are handpicked and gently crushed, then fermented using natural yeasts and traditional foot-treading. The wine is basket-pressed and completes fermentation on lees in a mix of new and old French and American oak barrels, adding to its depth and complexity. This wine is bottled without fining or filtration to enhance its terroir expression. Dead Arm Shiraz showcases dark fruit, chocolate, spice and earthy undertones wrapped in firm tannins making it an exemplary wine with significant cellaring potential.
