Understanding Henschke, Mount Edelstone Vineyard, Eden Valley, South Australia
The single-vineyard Mount Edelstone plot, with its centenarian vines, is characterised by its clay soils and dry climate, conditions that are ideal for producing Shiraz of intense concentration and complexity. The vineyard's name, meaning 'gemstone,' is a nod to the luminous quality of its wines. The Henschke family's meticulous approach to viticulture emphasises organic practices and a deep respect for the land, allowing for a pure expression of the vineyard in each bottle. Grapes are handpicked in cool mornings to preserve flavour freshness. Fruit is destemmed and ferments in open-top, concrete vats, stages that preserve flavour. Maturation for 18 months in oak barrels before blending follows. This wine ages further in bottle before its release. Mount Edelstone Shiraz features dark plum, blackberry and spice, underpinned by subtle notes of earth and leather. It offers a full-bodied palate with a robust structure, velvety tannins and a deep, lingering finish. The Mount Edelstone Shiraz has remarkable ageing potential.
