Understanding Grosset, Gaia, Clare Valley, South Australia
The sustainably-farmed Gaia vineyard, situated at one of the highest points in the Clare Valley, benefits from a cooler climate and rocky, austere soils. These conditions are ideal for growing Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc grapes that possess intense flavours and a balanced acidity, crucial for crafting a wine with depth and longevity. Grapes are hand-harvested, destemmed for flavour and tannin control and undergo fermentation in temperature-controlled stainless steel with regular extraction. The wine matures in about 40% new French oak for 18 months and is bottled without fining or filtering to promote vintage expression. It’s aged for a further year in bottle, resulting in a wine with subtle integration of oak-derived characteristics, such as spice and a hint of cedar, without masking the vibrant fruit qualities. Grosset Gaia features blackcurrant, dark cherry and herb supported by a backbone of firm tannins and a lively acidity. This blend has considerable ageing potential.
