Understanding Torbreck, RunRig, Barossa Valley, South Australia
Run Rig is crafted from old vine Shiraz, some more than 150 years old. With a nod to Northern Rhône winemaking, it includes a small amount of Viognier, co-fermented to add complexity and aromatic lift. The Shiraz and Viognier grapes are hand-picked. Traditional winemaking methods, including open-top fermentation and basket pressing, are typical. The wine is then aged in fine-grained French oak, more than half of which is new. During its 30 months of maturation, this wine is imbued with complex flavours without overpowering the fruit. Torbreck Run Rig displays dark fruit, spice and floral Viognier in a rich and voluptuous, palate with layers of lush fruit, balanced acidity and velvety tannins. This wine possesses remarkable ageing potential.
