The grapes for Descendant are sourced from Torbreck's estate vineyards in the Barossa Valley. The Shiraz component comes from old vines that produce intensely concentrated grapes with deep colour and structure. The Viognier, added in a smaller proportion, is sourced from younger vines that contribute aromatic complexity and finesse to the blend. Torbreck employs a co-fermentation process, where a small percentage of Viognier grapes are fermented with the Shiraz. This technique, inspired by the winemaking traditions of the Northern Rhône, enhances the colour, aroma and texture of the Shiraz. The wine is then aged for 18 months in oak previously used for Torbreck’s RunRig wine, a step that adds depth and complexity. Descendant Shiraz-Viognier features black fruit plus hints of floral and apricot notes from the Viognier in a lush and velvety palate with smooth tannins. This blend is notable for its ability to age gracefully, gaining additional nuance over time.
