Understanding Kaesler, Old Vine Shiraz, Barossa Valley, South Australia

The vineyards for the Old Vine Shiraz were planted in 1961 with cuttings from Kaesler’s iconic ‘Old Bastard’ vineyard which dates from the late 19th century. The age of the vines and rich, fertile soils contribute significantly to the complexity and concentration of the wine, making it a standout example of Barossa Shiraz. Kaesler's approach to making the Old Vine Shiraz involves a blend of techniques. Fermentation takes place with careful extraction methods to encourage a balance of colour, flavours and tannins. This is followed by ageing for 18 months in French oak. This process enhances the wine's depth and complexity. Kaesler Old Vine Shiraz displays ripe dark fruit, hints of pepper, leather, dark chocolate and savoury spice in a full-bodied and robust palate with smooth tannins. This wine has the potential to age gracefully.
