Understanding Ben Glaetzer, Anaperenna, Barossa Valley, South Australia
Godolphin, primarily a blend of Shiraz with about one-fifth of Cabernet Sauvignon, is sourced from old vineyards in the Barossa Valley. The region's warm climate and rich, varied soil types contribute significantly to the depth and character of the wine. These vineyards, with their low-yield but high-quality grapes, are key to the creation of Godolphin's unique profile. The winemaking approach for Godolphin embodies Ben Glaetzer’s philosophy of minimal intervention. The grapes are harvested at their peak of maturity and fermented using natural yeasts. The blend is then aged for 14 months in new oak that’s majority French with a portion of American wood. This method ensures that the oak supports but does not overshadow the natural character of the fruit. Godolphin showcases dark fruit, cassis, hints of oak, chocolate and spice in a full, rounded palate. This wine has impressive cellaring potential.
