Understanding Ben Glaetzer, Amon Ra, Barossa Valley, South Australia

The vineyards selected for Amon Ra are among the oldest in the Barossa Valley, contributing to the depth and complexity of the wine. The region’s hot and dry climate is ideal for growing Shiraz, allowing the grapes to develop intense flavours and rich tannins. The soil composition, predominantly old vineyards with limited yields, plays a critical role in defining the robust and concentrated profile of the wine. Grapes are handpicked and undergo fermentation with natural yeasts in open fermenters for heat control, followed by extended maceration to extract rich colours and flavours. The wine ages in mostly French with a small portion of American new oak for 16 months. This stage adds layers of complexity, introducing subtle notes of spice and vanilla. Amon Ra displays dark fruit, hints of chocolate, mocha and liquorice in a rich palate with robust tannins. This wine has excellent cellaring potential.
