Understanding Clonakilla, Shiraz Viognier, Canberra District, New South Wales
Clonakilla's vineyards, located in the cool-climate Murrumbateman region of the Canberra District, provide the ideal conditions for growing Shiraz and Viognier. The region's distinct seasonal changes, coupled with its granitic soils, contribute to the development of the grapes' intense flavours and aromatic qualities. In crafting this wine, a small proportion of Viognier is co-fermented with Shiraz, enhancing the wine's aromatic profile and softening the tannins. The blend is then aged for 12 months in part-new French oak which imparts elegance and a subtle complexity without overshadowing the fruit's natural vibrancy. Clonakilla Shiraz Viognier displays dark berry, floral undertones and a refined spicy finish. This wine has considerable ageing potential.
